Functional nutrition takes a root-cause approach, focusing on restoring balance in the body rather than simply addressing symptoms. One of the most commonly imbalanced systems is the digestive system, and in my experience, when we focus on healing the gut, other health conditions naturally improve.
All systems in the body are intricately interconnected. Our gut function goes well beyond just digestion. It influences inflammation, immune function, detoxification, hormone balance, and brain health. When gut health is out of balance, it can lead to widespread dysfunction.
A key reason for this is that we are more bacterial than we are human, in a ratio that is estimated to be 150:1. These microbes influence everything from digestion to neurotransmitter production, playing a major role in our overall health.
Understanding the Gut Microbiome
The gut microbiome is home to trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that work symbiotically with the body. This microbial ecosystem is has many vital functions including breaking down food for nutrient absorption, producing key vitamins like vitamin K2, regulating our immune system and influencing mood and cognitive function.
A diverse and balanced microbiome supports optimal health, while an imbalanced microbiome—often caused by poor diet, stress, or medications—can lead to chronic inflammation, digestive distress, and metabolic dysfunction.
Impact on Digestion and Nutrient Absorption
The gut lining is responsible for properly absorbing nutrients and preventing harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. When compromised, often due to processed foods, sugar, stress, or antibiotic use, nutrient absorption becomes impaired, leading to deficiencies,
Common symptoms of poor gut health include bloating, gas or constipation, chronic fatigue or foods sensitivities showing up that you may have never had before. By restoring gut health, we enhance nutrient absorption, ensuring that the body gets what it needs to function properly.
Gut Health and Immunity
Did you know that 70% of the body’s immune system resides in the gut? The microbiome regulates inflammation, protects against harmful pathogens, and supports the body's ability to fight off infections.
When gut bacteria are out of balance, the immune system may become overactive, leading to chronic inflammation and increased susceptibility to illness, autoimmune conditions, and allergies. Supporting gut health is a key strategy in building a resilient immune system.
The Gut-Brain Connection
The gut and brain communicate through the gut-brain axis, a complex network of nerves, hormones, and neurotransmitters. The microbiome plays a direct role in mood regulation, stress response, and cognitive function by producing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
When gut health is compromised, symptoms impact mental health, contributing to anxiety and depression, brain fog and poor stress tolerance. By restoring gut balance, we support mental clarity, emotional well-being, and cognitive performance.
Functional Nutrition’s Approach to Gut Health
In my practice, my first line of defense is not probiotics. Instead, I focus on creating the right gut environment first, allowing beneficial bacteria to naturally thrive before introducing external probiotic support.
First, I am to remove what harms healthy gut bacteria like sugar, refined grains and pro-inflammatory foods that are highly processed with chemical additives. Second, focus on replacing what nourishes gut bacteria: fibre! Boost whole plant-based foods that provide prebiotics to fuel beneficial bacteria, polyphenols and healthy fats to support gut lining integrity. Then, third, repopulate with probiotics when the right landscape is ready.
Final Thoughts
Gut health is the foundation of functional nutrition because it impacts every system in the body. When we take a strategic approach to removing what disrupts gut balance, nourishing beneficial bacteria, and supporting microbiome diversity, we create the conditions for long-term wellness.
Healing starts in the gut, and by prioritizing digestive health, we set the stage for whole-body healing.
